White sand, clear water and the east-coast light: what to know about planning a wedding in Ayia Napa or Protaras.
The east coast of Cyprus is known for the clearest water on the island and long beaches of pale sand. Ayia Napa is lively, with the harbour and the sea caves at Cape Greco nearby; Protaras, just up the coast, is quieter, with family hotels and small coves.
The ceremony. Many couples marry on the beach or on a hotel terrace above the sea. Late afternoon is best: the sun is lower, the sand is cooler and the guests are comfortable.
The light. The east coast faces the sunrise, so the sun sets behind the land. The best portraits are usually in the hour before sunset, when the light is warm on the water, and Cape Greco’s cliffs are a short drive for a portrait session.
The wind. A sea breeze is common. It moves the veil beautifully in photographs; for the film, wireless microphones keep the vows clear.
Travel. Larnaca airport is about 45 minutes away. We are based in Paphos, so we plan our travel to arrive early and stay for the whole day: there is nothing extra for you to organise. We have filmed weddings in Protaras, including at Constantinos the Great Beach Hotel.
